they missed the world series and they will miss the super bowl as well but they are sending all of their support and the good vibrations all the same. the excitement of course building down in new orleans. the city is known for a good time. that's where comcast sports net is joining us live. it's on the line now. one game winner takes all. what are players and coaches saying about this monumental week ahead? >> reporter: they're trying to keep everything as normal as possible, jon, which seems practically impossible to do when you are in new orleans a week long before the super bowl. there are some teams out there that set clocks in their facility ahead 15 minutes to get players to show up early to every meeting. i think they 49ers did that to the pilot on the delta charter. they were scheduled to get in 7:30 local time. they touched down at 7:00. they were pumped and amped to get here to the super bowl city. a place where the 49ers have

actually won a super bowl before. that was in 1990. they blew out denver broncos 55-10. this one expected to be closer than that. jim harbaugh was talking to the super bowl media for the first time. >> glad to see everybody. we're super excited to be here. unchartered waters for a rookie super bowl coach. that's exciting too. we have a great thrill and great desire to be in unchartered waters. our coaches and our players have always strives in that kind of environment. >> i think if you're prepared for a situation you're going to be confident when you go out to try to win a football game or whatever you're doing. if you're prepared for it, you're going to be confident. head down. keep working. this isn't a time to relax and get out of your routine or stop working hard. this is when you should work

bay between these two cities. >> reporter: good morning. in baseball we have the true battle of the bay. now it seems that we have the battle over the san francisco 49ers. the question here is who gets to stake a claim to the team. here it is. first off, the niners bear the name san francisco as we all know. starting next season the 2014 season, they will call santa clara home. still it mayor ed lee tells the examiner he continues the franchise the san francisco 49ers no matter what. how about this? civic center plaza in san francisco where the mayor's office is is not lit up in red and gold as you might expect considering the fact that the tower was colored in orange and black no san francisco giants when they made the run for the world series. same story in santa clara. jamie matthews tells the amermey news his city is celebrating low key. city hall down here is also dark

this morning. when it comes down to it, isn't it all about the fans? i don't think the fans really care. i spent some time in san francisco over the weekend and time in the south bay and i saw plenty of 49er love to go around. a lot of people sporting their 49ers jerseys and doing so with pride. live in santa clara, marla tellez, "today in the bay." >> i was out of the area. i saw it even. it's just california pride now. that new stadium before you go right behind you there, what kind of progress is being made on the construction? >> reporter: it's pretty exciting actually just announced in the last week this is going to be the first professional football stadium to open with lead certification which means it's going to be very green and environmentally friendly. much of it will run on solar energy and they're going to be installing those solar panels throughout the stadium and the panels will provide enough power over the course of the year to offset the power consumed at the stadium during niners home

success with those solar panels in candlestick as they will in santa clara. more sunshine in the south bay. that will be the case this afternoon. 48 to start. chilly in places like gilroy. throughout the morning hours you need the coat for the first part of the day. the fog will thicken before it gets better. expected to be at the worst between 6:00 and 10:00. sunshine over the greater bay area and a nice day. as we head throughout the afternoon, hour by hour forecast works like this. at noon as you break for lunch, chilly. still holding onto that sweater weather. by 4:00 p.m., tough guy can ditch that jacket. 58 degrees is not too bad. 56 at the coast. if you are sensitive to cold, keep that jacket handy. you can ditch it later this week as temperatures approach the 70s. we'll tell you where and when in our next report. let's check the drive. good morning, mike. >> good morning. we're in that lull between the first and second burst for that south bay 101 slow spot. here's the live shot just north of 680. the maps will show you that we

do have slowing between 680 and 880 but that will begin to fill in again. speeds were down to 40. back up again to 60 almost. they'll come down in the commute direction over the next few. south 680 approaching capital expressway. word of an earlier crash. activity is off to the shoulder. no slowing coming around the bend. we'll watch for that. any updates from chp over the next few. meanwhile, we'll look at the overall south bay commute. you have a nice flow of traffic with the build starting for 87 and 85 as well. we'll watch for patchy slowing there over the next half hour as it typically happens on a monday. tri-valley drive, livermore no problems. no surprises. we just have slower drive approaching north livermore. orange from the right. speeds into upper 40s down toward 45 at the worst right now. live look outside shows you how things are at the bay bridge. the backup in the toll plaza cash lanes. no metering lights. it means volume on east shore freeway looking steady and smooth right now. that's good news. i think i have one more live

shot for you. i don't. we'll send you another one. about 1,000 people in the dark in san lorenzo this morning. pg&e tells us a car hit a power pole around 1:30 this morning. initially more than 2,800 people were without power. we also have a deadly crash to tell you about. it becomes a crime scene as the chp investigates a possible hit and run in foster city. officers say one person was killed on the eastbound off-ramp from highway 92 to foster city boulevard last night. the chp now saying that car struck and killed a victim may have fled the scene. all eastbound lanes were shut down for several hours overnight. it's 6:10. coming up, double capacity with no way out. why survivors say they were actually stopped by security as flames ripped through a nightclub in brazil.

marissa mayer has been hobnobbing in switzerland these days but now turns her attention to a less glamorous group. >> she is going to explain yahoo! financials today. >> i think what we're really going to want to hear about is yahoo!'s customers and how many users and how long they stick around on the site and what sort of improvements yahoo! has planned ahead. all of this happens after the closing bell as yahoo! reports quarterly profits. stock up 30% since marissa mayer took over on the left. it still is by most accounts the third most visited site on the internet. mayer has been ceo about six months. looking ahead on friday we'll get the latest employment numbers always important. the unemployment rate currently standing at 7.8%. over the weekend the loose coalition of hackers and activists known as unanimous hit one of the websites run by the

justice department in protest over the prosecution of aaron schwartz. this morning the boston globe, schwartz's hometown newspaper ran an editorial condemning his prosecution. schwartz hanged himself with a belt earlier this month. a bipartisan group of senators says it reached an agreement on immigration reform that will have a big effect on silicon valley and high tech because the proposed changes include highly skilled immigrants. tracie potts will have full coverage from washington coming up in just a few minutes. >> thank you very much. 6:14. time for a quick check of the day's top stories. investigators say bouncers at a nightclub in brazil initially tried to block people from escaping a deadly fire. firefighters say the guards thought people were trying to run out on their bar tab. the fire killed 230 people sunday morning. president obama and vice president joe biden meeting with police chiefs today to discuss

the president's proposed gun regulations. police chiefs from aurora, colorado, oak creek, wisconsin and newtown, connecticut, are expected to attend. grammy winning singer chris brown sunday investigation for allegedly assaulting another celebrity in hollywood this weekend. brown punched a fellow singer in a fight over a parking space. this is no fairy tale. little men with little peerbear causing a big-time problem in one east bay city. christie smith has details on this unusual debate. good morning. >> reporter: it's hard to be upset when a gnome ain a pointy hat and nickers. you barely notice them. they are on every pole on this street. that one down there. this one and then this one that we're standing in front of here at the bottom someone took the time to paint gnomes and

mushrooms on boards and screw them into power poles in oakland. one neighbor told us it could be graffiti and oakland has its crime problems. this is kind of fun. according to the chronicle, pg&e owns some of these power poles and they may be removing the gnomes because it could inspire other people to add other things to their property and they don't want that. this morning one neighbor tells us, hey, the gnomes work for him. >> it really is not bothering anything. it really doesn't matter. somebody has a little art. they put it down here. let them be. >> reporter: now it is unclear who placed them or painted them. the gnomes or why they are here. estimates are there are hundreds of them. i do have calls into pg&e about the gnomes. meantime, i have to tell you, in this neighborhood, they have quite a following. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> all right. a couple punch lines that could

city. mondays can be tough. winds are helping us out when it comes to fog settling in. right now not too bad. we stop the clock on future cast at 7:00 a.m. mostly cloudy conditions. by 9:00 p.m., most of that fog is located over the south bay. we'll see that fog clear from north to south today. santa rosa will end up being one of the warmer areas across the greater bay area. by 4:00 p.m. complete sunshine everywhere. we have a warmup on the way. upper 50s for today. we'll hold onto upper 50s for tuesday and into wednesday and thursday the mid 60s. we'll be in upper 60s by thursday. and then close to 70 on friday. let's check your drive. good morning. >> good morning. first an update for folks using capital corridor service. good news/bad news. service is restored between sacramento and davis. we have a 30-minute to 90-minute delay after the trespasser incidents. don't have details on what exactly happened. trains are moving again. half hour to maybe an hour and a half depending on where along that line you get in.

trains will come into the bay area aer that earlier issue. here we look at south 880 through hayward and into union city with slower southbound commute. we expect that as volume starts to build. also laura told you about that power pole down over there in san lorenzo. there may be some power out for signals around the area. a major roadway parallel toward 880 so that's what you'll have to watch for a little bit. be careful. you may have traffic control. meanwhile, castro valley y picks up volume north 238. keep that in mind. folks heading up to bay bridge, we have metering lights on at the toll plaza and the backup here. you see fastrak lance lanes are moving. east shore freeway moving into the 50s through berkeley and eme emeryvil emeryville. palo alto northbound with those taillights past willow avenue and heading up in toward san mateo. easy drive on the northbound

basketball star and palo alto native jeremy lin stopped by the sundance festival last night for final screening on his rise to stardom. lin and filmmakers got a standing ovation. the filmmaker says when he approached lin about the documentary, he wasn't excited about it but warmed up to the idea. >> i'm not kim kardashian or reality. i don't want that kind of attention. i'm just a ballplayer. for me i'm, like, you're a ballplayer with an awesome story. let's try something. >> the more that i went through my journey, the more i realized how big of a part god was in everything and i just felt like i had to share it and share it with the world so this is one of the ways in which i could do it. >> lin says he had to overcome

through the area pretty typical. you have your westbound commute slowing as you approach university. then a smooth approach toward that berkeley curve. some folks still need to see headlights. let's show them to them. a backup has formed. 15 to 20-minute build here. oakland, nice smooth flow of traffic. northbound not a problem toward high street. southbound side getting on at broadway to south 880 reports of an earlier disabled vehicle. there may be activity there. we don't see slowing for 880 itself. in the south bay, your northbound routes do have volume starting. that's the second burst. north 101 from 680 to 880, speeds are coming down a bit as well as approach through capital and pa . ballpark figures for breaking ground in san francisco. we'll have the giant plan to revamp that waterfront near at&t

i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> today marks the second week of the second term for president obama. so far we have seen washington stuck on dealing with money issues and gun control. we may see movement this week on another big issue. immigration. both republicans and democrats say they need to address it. for president obama, immigration reform is a first term promise not kept. for republicans, it could be a key to winning in 2016. last year 70% of hispanics voted for president obama. "today in the bay's" tracie potts live on capitol hill this morning. democrats and republicans say they have come up with a compromise. big announcement set for later  today. what do we know about it so far? >> what we know is we got a sneak peek at the short document that they are releasing today. it's sort of a frame work for what they want to do later. it would include more border patrol. more people at the border and also better equipment there. employers verification system keeping them responsible for

hiring people who are illegal and stiffening the penalties for that. a guest worker program and preserving the ability to hire immigrants in agriculture jobs specifically but tying that to the unemployment rate. more jobs available in the u.s. more people can be hired and vice versa and green cards for people who graduate in this country with science and advance science and math degrees. >> we know there's controversy. what would be likely the most controversial part of this plan? >> probably the part that says people that are here illegally can have a path to citizenship. that's something that republicans in the past have resisted but keep in mind they are part of this plan and the way they have it set up it would not be an easy path to citizenship. you have to pass a few background checks pay back taxes and pay fines and penalties for being here illegally in the first place. a probationary period. you would have to learn english. you would have to prove you have a work history. eventually to get to the back of the line in that process to

become a citizen. >> what's the next step for the proposal? >> the next step, this is really sort of an outline. the next step is to fine tune it. the details. the devil is always in details. what lawmakers are going to need to do is sell it to broader parties and come up with legislation they think they can get passed. >> thank you very much, tracie. christina loren has everybody thinking about this forecast. she's been talking about tank tops and sleeveless shirts. >> you have them thinking about something else than me, jon kelley. 6:32. good morning to you. get your mindset on beach gear. we're headed toward beautiful beach conditions. a mix of sun and clouds to start. sunrise around 7:20 this morning. 38 degrees in napa. 38 degrees in livermore. 6:33 now we'll have to wait on the sun's arrival longer. once it comes up, a nice sunny day.

mostly sunny conditions all day long. wind out of the east at 3 miles per hour right now. that shows that winds are shifting up in the north bay. we still have westerly flow for most of the bay area. that means that cool ocean air is carried off the pacific and right into your neighborhood. we are expecting those winds to increase out of the west throughout the day today and future cast tells that story. between now and 5:00 p.m., expecting some pretty strong gusts between 40 and 60 miles an hour from time to time at the immediate coast and higher elevations where you lack friction at the surface. so just keep in mind not a great day for flowing skirt but it will feel cooler than 58 degrees with winds blowing inland later today. 57 bayside. 56 degrees at the coast. looking for warmer days? we have them just around the corner. we'll talk about when the beach weather settles into the bay area in my next report. any problems on the roads on this monday? >> a cluster of issues on the east side of bay bridge approach. with you see taillights and

volume kicking in as it does 6:30 on monday. there's your flow. no incidents on the span here for san mateo bridge. map shows east bay say. slowing south 880 out of san lorenzo. that's typical. we do have this now just reported. we have a crew heading toward an intersection where there is a report of a water main break. if you are traveling city streets, it may be an issue through that section. might be another issue right around the intersection because of a car that hit and knocked down a power pole overnight and that took out power in the area. signals and street lights might be affected as well. there's the castro valley y and slowing there. we'll look at the approach down through berkeley and toward emeryville toward west 80. speeds are coming down into the 40s because of volume and backup at the toll plaza. we'll show you that in the next report. back to you.

thank you very much. new this morning, whether you love it or you hate it, it's a tried and true tradition of san francisco and it now may be threatened. this morning comes word beta breakers sponsor is pulling out of the race. will the race go on? bob redell has the latest on this story. bob, good morning. >> reporter: organizers of the beta breakers are going to have to do some running of their own trying to quickly chase down a new backer of this annual foot race that runs here in san francisco. problem is they don't have much time. the race is scheduled for may 19th. the san francisco chronicle reporting that a website that allows you to make your own t-shirts has dropped out as the main sponsor after it could not come to an agreement with the organizers. it was the race's third sponsor in ten years having paid anywhere from 250 to $500,000 each year to attach its name to the huge event in san francisco. by the way, that sponsorship

knee never covered the $1 million cost. even if organizers cannot find a new sponsor over the next four months, the race's general manager tells the chronicle that there will be a race regardless. the paper pointing out that the race is put on by a man that is a billionaire. bob redell, "today in the bay." the san francisco giants plans to build a new neighborhood south of at&t park all but finished. final plans for mission rock development won't come to the port commission for approval until late next month. commissioners sound like they are prepared to sign off on the deal. the proposed development would have room for retail and office space. if all goes as planned, the mission rock development will break down in 2013. unrest in egypt. how chaos is leading to curfews

egypt right now in a state of emergency. a curfew in certain parts of that country will now be enforced after a fifth consecutive day of violence there. more than 50 people so far have been killed. the unrest comes after the president's islamist policies and slow pace of change after taking office. new details in that deadly nightclub fire in brazil. survivors say that security guards tried to block the exit because they thought people were running out on their bar tabs. the fire started when a band's pyrotechnics got out of control. 230 people were killed. firefighters had a hard time getting to the fire because the club only had one exit which was partially blocked.

knew the fact there's been ten super bowls here in new orleans. why does the nfl keep coming back to new orleans? you get off the plane and you remember why. we're in the middle of the mardi gras parade season. we saw one of the last ones they'll have for a bit sunday. you see some of the floats and the bands going by. takes about two months for those floats to go from a thought and idea to being painted and out on the street. good stuff over there in new orleans. they're going to take about a week long break of the parties and parades on mardi gras on canal street there for the super bowl. it will be too much craziness with both events going on at the same time. they'll resume up with mardi gras parades up until fat tuesday which falls on february 12th this year. it's a big bummer for 49er players who got off the team plane last night at 7:00 a half hour before schedule because they missed that last mardi gras parade on canal street last night. the team -- i don't think they

a lot of improvement in the air quality department. high pressure is building in. this is really going to move in as we head throughout wednesday into thursday. by friday some of your cities right by the beach santa cruz touching on low 70s. get ready for that. we'll see the dry pattern resume developing dry winds pushing offshore and warming along the way. we'll see warmer temperatures. our air quality will likely suffer. i want to point that out right off the bat. we're not expecting that until thursday or friday. today's high work like this. upper 50s. 59 in los gatos. getting into tomorrow, holding onto upper 50s and then we'll see a return of the 60s. mid 60s even by wednesday. jumping your numbers up to 68 degrees by thursday. and then peak warmth on friday. 69 degrees inland. that means places like santa cruz could hit 73 degrees. so hopefully you won't have to call in sick. make those plans in advance if you want to hit the beach on friday. trying to get to work right now, mike is here to help you out.
